Customer Expectation Levels for iPhone Applications?

Following on from my last article, which looked at some of the reasons/motivations for iPhone Developers to develop apps (see here), I thought I would look at the customer expectations levels. That decision was brought on by a great comment that I have seen from a user called bowkomor... "The passionate developer cares about the software he creates. It's his baby! They rarely care about how much money you make with it, neither do they care to how many clients you sell it. They make it a personal honor to deliver the highest quality (bug free, easily maintainable, well tested, well documented...) software they can. Why Social Media Check-Ins Could Bridge the ROBO Gap

Badges, Passports, the Creator, the Founder, the Mayor, getting a Pin, picking up a raccoon..This is the language of the newest phenomenon to hit the location-enabled social media marketing world. I am talking about Social Networking Games. No longer only for geeks and geocachers, these are real tools for seeing where your friends are, in real time, as they “check-in” to locations and share what they are doing. Since the device knows where it is, you can only check in to a location you are visiting. While mobile location sharing is not new, incentives that tap our competitive side offered by a “game” are, and this makes all the difference.

Apple's iPad & Business Will Make a Knock-out Combination

On Monday I wrote an article that put my initial thoughts and findings together on the newly announced iPad's. It included my belief that the current mass of iPhone Developers are excited & poised to adopt iPad, not only with their current applications on the App Store, but creating new applications to take advantage of the iPad... A New app 'gold rush' gathering momentum!

Kindle vs Publishers - The Wrong Debate

Another episode of As The E-Book Turns wrapped this week, with Amazon locked in a page-turning battle with the publishing industry. The plot twists are many, but here's a quick outline: Amazon wants to continue charging $10 for e-book versions of most new titles and bestsellers, but the industry's leading publishers think that price is too low. Macmillan, for instance, wants $13 to $15 for most of its e-book titles, a demand that Amazon conceded to last week. Hachette, another major publisher, also plans to drop Amazon's $9.99 price model, and would rather see many e-books in the $15 range. HarperCollins has made a similar move. Meanwhile, the industry just gained an ally in Apple, which has agreed to let publishers set the price of e-books designed for its new iPad tablet. It's no surprise that publishers would want higher e-book prices, particularly for hot new bestsellers. But their strong-arm efforts to eradicate Amazon's consumer-friendly pricing aren't a good way to grow a nascent e-book market (and e-reader) market.

Jobs Has a Few Words for Google & Adobe & They Ain’t Pretty: Reports

"We did not enter the search business. [Google] entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won't let them... I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing. This don't be evil mantra - It's bullshit." - Steve Jobs at an employee Town Hall the other day according to Wired, MacRummors et al although he may have said "load of crap" not "bullshit"; sources vary. Jobs reportedly means to use "aggressive updates" to stay way out front of the Android phone.

New Media on Ulitzer - Social Media Marketing Is Hot Hot Hot

Social media marketing is hot hot hot. While the disjointed components have risen and fallien with the VC tide for some time now, a coherent roadmap is emerging for marketing a brand, product or service via social media. No longer just a fad for college kids or a way to virally promote your fart app, social media is emerging as a powerful and rapidly growing low-cost, high-reward force for driving sales. The price tag is appealing and there is no barrier to entry. With billions now being bet by the major players on the need for brands to have a mobile ad strategy, social media has evolved in the wings from a nice-to-have to a must-have for every company that sells anything. From a local pizza joint to a consumer packaged goods goliath, the power of human interaction to spread a marketing message though trusted social networks at very low cost is suddenly here (and increasingly measurable).

Siri Brings Their Virtual Personal Assistant’s Smarts to the iPhone

Siri provoked a flurry of interest last summer, and presumably not just because CTO Tom Gruber took part in one of my podcasts. The iPad Is the Ultimate Thin Client

In my earlier post, when I railed against the iPad, it was mostly personal disappointment and letdown.  I was disappointed by the technical specs, most notably the aspect ratio, and the exclusion of USB, HDMI, and webcams.  Those items can all be added on in later iterations (which I firmly believe they will – perhaps [...] Related posts:

iPad on Ulitzer - I’ll Buy iPad. But What For?

I’m proud to consider myself an upper middle class American . Why am I so proud about it? Because I haven’t been born in an upper middle class American family. I came to the USA 18 years ago with $200 in my pocket on a visitor’s visa. Don’t rush reporting on me to the Immigration authorities. I was legal in this country each and every day since. Then came the work visa (H1B), after that the green card, and back in 2001, I became an American citizen. Our family consists of me (silver 15” MacBook Pro), two sons (black 13” MacBook and a silver 13” MacBook) and my wife (post World War II Windows PC own by her employer, a filthy rich international bank). I also have an iPhone.

iPad on Ulitzer - iPad Carries Apple Chip

While the market figures out whether it wants one of those new iHyped Apple iPad tablets when they get here in March, what it would do with it if it got one, whether it will kill the Kindle, threaten netbooks or backfire on Apple, note that it’s the first time Apple is using its own chip, supposedly giving purpose to its 2008 PA Semi acquisition.

iPad - What It Means For Developers

Today was a historic day in computing history. While the techno-geeks will argue for the next several months what this really means and what the Apple iPad is missing or why it’s only a large screen iPod Touch, I’m going to be focused on what I think this really means to some key industries and how Appcelerator can help. From my perspective, web developers are talking up and overwhelmingly are planning new application experiences for the new iPad. We surveyed just a small sample of our community of developers and found that over 90% of them plan on building an iPad application in the next 12 months.

Apple Leads the Pack of Application Stores

Netsize previews survey results at M-Days mobile conference and trade show in Munich, Germany

Munich, Germany, January 28, 2010 -- Netsize, a leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today revealed the first results of the Mobile Trends Survey 2010. Drawing from an online survey of 1,000+ professionals and practitioners, the survey provides insights into key trends that top the industry agenda, including the advance of mobile applications stores, progress towards global mobile commerce and the pivotal importance of mobile as a means to bridge our virtual and physical worlds.

Using the occasion of M-Days - one of Europe's biggest mobile industry events and exhibitions held in Munich, Germany - Netsize provided conference attendees, industry influencers and key bloggers a sneak peek into the controversial survey results, starting with respondents' views on app store leaders and the enablers that give them and their offers the competitive edge.

According to the survey, the vast majority (87 percent) of respondents believe the Apple App Store will be the most successful app store in the mobile space. Google's Android Market is a distant second (60 percent), followed by Nokia's Ovi Store (30 percent) and RIM's BlackBerry App World (27 percent). Surprisingly, applications stores run by mobile operators finished low in the list, indicating that platform providers and handset makers may well dominate the space for a time to come.

When asked to rate the unique selling proposition of application stores over other software distribution and sales channels, 65 percent of respondents put convenience ("everything in one place") at the top of the list. This was followed by compatibility "software applications specific to the device"), choice ("a long tail of thousands of applications to choose from"), and ease of payment ("operator billing, for example").

Netsize, provider of operator billing solutions to most of the large mobile device vendors for their application stores, released the application store survey findings to the stage for a lively discussion of the future of mobile and the role of software application stores during "Mobile Trends 2020, Mobile Research and App-Commerce: What Comes Next in Europe?". The M-Days session was led and moderated by Peggy Anne Salz, mobile thought leader and MSearchGroove Founder and Chief Analyst.

The complete mobile trends survey results - which cover topics related to mobile entertainment, mobile marketing, mobile commerce, mobile payments and mobile convergence - will be released as part of the Netsize Guide 2010, a comprehensive mobile industry analysis and almanac published by Netsize and written by MSearchGroove's Salz. Netsize will launch the Netsize Guide 2010 on February 16, 2010 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Apple iPad Impressive, but Kindle Not Dead Yet

Apple’s iPad announcement is big news. It’s a robust tablet form factor that is a half-inch thick and weighs 1.5 pounds, with a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen IPS LCD display that supports 1024x768 VGA video. The ebook implementation is everything one would expect. The application can be downloaded from the App Store and the content is managed by the “iTunes” platform, so it seamlessly integrates e-book with the other popular personal content. All iBooks are stored on your Bookshelf. As you would expect, all books are displayed on a sharp, color screen with many personalization options.

Nokia Follows Google But Can They Capitalize In The US?

Is "free nav" from Nokia a part of a plan, or a defensive reaction to try to take back lost smartphone market share and try to establish a US beachhead in the face serious pressure from "new" movers and shakers like Google, Apple, RIM, Palm, and others? It certainly seems Nokia had no choice but to go this route, as they are in market share freefall and have had no answer for the beloved iPhone, years after its launch. They lost 10% smartphone market share in Q4 2008, while Apple and RIM took off. In the middle of all this, Ovi's May 2009 app store launch was widely considered a flop. Now Google is in the mix too, bringing some serious mobile advertising chops to-bear. Nokia makes excellent hardware and have a dominant global market share position (38%), but they seem to have stood by and watched, as the US mobile advertising market rapidly evolved. They let Google jump behind the counter while no one was minding the store.

Apple iPad in 3rd Place Behind iPhone and Android For Application Developers

Appcelerator, a platform which is used to develop Apple Tablet applications, on Tuesday, announced the findings of a new poll taken of application developers about their plans to build applications for the Apple Tablet. Taken last week from a pool of 18,000 of Appcelerator's application developers, 554 developers weighed in with responses about their plans, interests and preferences around Apple's forthcoming Tablet. Appcelerator also announced that its flagship cross-platform product, Appcelerator Titanium, would support the new Apple Tablet. Titanium enables web developers to use industry-standard, open-source Web technologies such as Javascript, HTML, and CSS to quickly build rich, fully native applications that run on the iPhone, Android, Apple Tablet, PC, Macintosh, Linux platforms from a single code base.

SAP ERP on iPhones

I met with a team of mobile software developers this week that have developed a fascinating mobile technology that enables the user to access ALL of SAP's ERP and other SAP components on an iPhone. I am particularly intrigued because I have never seen a mobile application that can quickly enable an entire ERP with only a 25 MB download and a 15 minute set-up. The use case would be any SAP user or expert that needs to access any page or component of SAP while out of the office. It is all there on the iPhone. I was very impressed. Most often only traveling sales or service people are prioritized for enterprise mobile applications, but this technology will enable anyone in the company that needs access to the SAP system to simply login with their iPhone and go to work.

Wilson Kerr Launches "Location Based Services" Topic on Ulitzer

The power of Location allows information (including advertising) to be delivered to consumers most-able to act upon this information, based on their real-time proximity to the physical locations where transactions occur. Location is changing the very nature of advertising and mobile Location Based Services (LBS) are expected to see a 45% increase in revenue generated in 2010. In the next 5 years, more people will gain access to the web on their phones than on PCs. Since consumers carry their phones with them, this is a game-changer for performance-based advertising. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Nokia, Apple, Amazon, Dell, Garmin, etc are all in the mix here and there is a lot at stake.

I have been totally excited since the booking of the Moscone West by Apple for January 27 and believe, like most of the industry followers, that Apple will be announcing their tablet/slate device. Whilst digging around I came across this great video that shows how fantastic such a device could be used in the areas of education and show some innovations that such a device could bring to students in the new decade. Could we now be on the edge of a totally e-classroom, that not only allows the student to carry e-books etc (such as in the video) but allows electronic submission of work & central management of timetables & attendance etc?

Pentomino The Duel 1.0

Category: Games
Price: $1.99 -> Free (
iTunes)

Description:

If you are keen on board games and enjoy competition this game is just for you.

Unlike a classic version of Pentomimo, this game?s major objective is to defeat your opponent rather than just to piece together a jigsaw puzzle.

This is a very fast game, during which you and your opponent take turns in placing tokens on the chessboard. It is a bit more difficult than checkers but easier than chess to play. You may place your tokens in any given place provided that they do not overlap or stick out of the chessboard.

You may turn the tokens as you wish. The player who puts a token on the chessboard as the last one wins the game so try strategizing your moves to bar your opponent.

If you use a full version of the game, you do not need to wait additional 30 seconds for your opponent?s move.

Category: Games
Price: $0.99 -> Free (
iTunes)

Description:

Apps on the Go is a game you play when you are on a long road trip, airplane ride, etc. It is a very addicting game and makes time "fly". There are two apps in here: "Guess the Number" and "Speedy Fingers." Guess the Number gives you a limited amount of tries and you try to guess the number without using more tries than the amount given. There are 4 difficulties ranging from Easy to Extreme. Each time you play a random number will generate so it will never be the same. Speedy Fingers is a racing game where you try to beat the computer to the finish line. The faster you tap the faster you will go and the more wins you will have! At any time you will be able to stop the game and pause it. You can choose from 4 different color of cars: red, purple, white, and green. Note: In the next update there will be a multiplayer mode and a difficulty setting.
